Pumpherston United V AC Oxgangs Colts

Under 15 South East Regional Cup 1st round

13.09.2009

Pumpherston United didn't quite know what to expect from AC Oxgangs Colts this morning having played and lost to their opponent's club mates in a friendly during the pre-season. Pumpherston lost that fixture 6-1 and so were understandably a little apprehensive heading towards kick off today .

Pumpherston have put together some good results recently with 3 wins from 3 including 19 goals scored and only two conceded. Ac Oxgangs Colts currently sit fourth in Edinburgh's third Division with 2 wins from four games played to date.

The first half kicked off and Pumpherston didn't show any signs of nerves, a through ball to James out on the right wing almost resulted in Pumpherston's first within minutes of the opening. James just pulled his shot past the far post after a determined run into the 18 yard box.

3 minutes later an identical move saw James battle past the left back and into the box again, this time smashing the ball past the AC keeper and into the top of the net.

A great start however Oxgangs were level pegging 5 minutes later. Having defended 2 AC corners already Pumpherston needed to get the ball down and out but it wasn't to be, they conceded a third corner and this time Oxgangs made it count when an AC midfielder rose above the defenders to head home the equaliser.

Pumpherston took the lead again 15 minutes in when some more determined running down Pumpherston's right wing by James was rewarded with an excellent cross, an equally excellent headed finish by Scott sealed goal number two.

AC Oxgangs weren't about to leave it there however. An attack built from midfield and spilled out onto Pumpherston's right wing, the Colts midfielder skipped past the Pumpherston defence before calmly slotting the ball past Scott. Moments later Scott kept Pumpherston in it with a brilliant full stretch save, tipping the ball around his right post.

A nervy 15 minute period saw most of the play in midfield with either defence being tested on a number of occasions.

With 5 minutes to go Pumpherston edged into the lead for the third time, this time a break forward started by Jack resulting in an own goal. James collected the ball on the right and knocked in a cross, it was met by an Oxgangs defender who nodded it past his stranded keeper.

More woe followed for the visitors when a delightful piece of skill in midfield saw Scott chip the ball over himself before turning and lobbing the keeper. Scott's second earned Pumpherston some breathing space as the first half drew to a close.

Half time

Pumpherston Utd 4-2 AC Oxgans Colts.

Into the second half and a more focused Pumpherston emerged. The order of the day from the coaches was for the lads to relax and play their game, short sharp passes and simple football.

The reward came just 5 minutes into the second half as Liam found himself goal bound on the edge of the 18 yard box, his well hit strike was too much for the AC keeper.

Oxgangs continued to play, determined to get back into the game. Another 15 minute spell of midfield contest saw both teams threaten while both defences broke up any unwelcomed attacks.

Two goals in two minutes from Kye for Pumphy finally put the game out of reach for the visitors though.

His first came as a result of a rebound off of the AC Oxgangs goalkeeper. Pumpherston had pressed forward and Liam let go of another shot in the 18 yard box, the keeper stood up well however the stray ball was picked up by Kye and he slotted it into the net for Pumpherston's sixth.

Kye's second and Pumpherston's seventh came just a minute later. Angus picked the ball off of AC Oxgangs from the centre and worked it out to Kye on the left, Kye lifted the ball above the advancing keeper for a very composed finish.

Despite the score line the Colts didn't let their heads drop. The AC goalie marshalled his troops from the back and urged them forward. Their midfield did cause problems and Jack, Angus, Jamie and Ally had to be on their toes to snuff out any forward runs.

Ten minutes after Kye's double Pumpherston won an indirect free kick on the right of AC's 18 yard box. James rolled the ball back towards Sean who hit a lovely weighted shot over the head of the stranded Oxgangs keeper and under the bar for number 8.

Five minutes from the end Pumpherston grabbed number nine by way of a penalty kick. Nathan, who had earlier put in a good 30 minutes as a right back found himself surging into the penalty box accompanied by two AC defenders. The goalie came off his line to collect the ball from Nathan's feet however the combination saw Nathan bundled over. The resultant penalty kick almost never made it in. The Oxgangs keeper got a hand to it but it wasn't enough to keep the ball from nestling over the line by his left hand post.

Final Score

Pumpherston 9-2 AC Oxgangs Colts
